Around Downtown: From 4 to 94


Betty Jones celebrating her 94th birthday at the Albany Historic Carousel & Museum. Her daughter JoAnne is in the background watching the carousel wiz past. Carousel volunteers were eager to help set up a unique place on the carousel where Betty could ride in her wheelchair. 

The Historic Carousel & Museum is located at 503 W 1st Ave in Albany, Ore. You can reach them at (541) 497-2934 or visit their website, albanycarousel.com, for hours and information about activities taking place at the carousel including how to rent the building for a party. 

Leiney Wallace, 4, enjoys lunch with her parents, Bobbi and Kyle Wallace, at Big Town Hero after riding the carousel as part of a belated birthday celebration.

Big Town Hero is located at 327 SW 2nd Ave in downtown Albany, open 10am-5pm Monday-Friday. Reach the restaurant at  (541) 928-1114. 


The Pix Theater is located in the historic Straney & Moore Building at 321 SW 2nd Ave in Albany. A plaque on the exterior reads, “One of the finest examples of Queen Anne commercial architecture in the City of Albany." The Pix Theater was opened October 27, 1971. Following a remodel, it reopened January 6, 2006.

My name is Alicen, and I'm returning to college after staying home with my kids for the last decade. They are 15 and 18, and I homeschooled them both up through 8th grade. I took an  entrepreneurship  business  class last year, but I want to learn more about marketing.   ABOUT ME My name is Alicen, and I have returned to college after staying home with my kids for the last decade. They are 15 and 18, and I homeschooled them both up through 8th grade. Now that they both attend public high school, I have time to devote to starting a new career. I will get my Associate's in Visual Communication at the end of this term. Last term, I worked as the Assistant Marketing Director for the Commuter, and I will continue in that position this term. Working for the Commuter has been great. Not only did I get some of my classes paid for, but I also enjoyed the work, gained experience, and boosted my portfolio.  Just recently, I've started doing some freelance work for the Greater Albany Public Schools Foundation. I hope to be a freelance designer or do contract work when I graduate. I love to paint and draw, especially watercolor.
